This is the side of The Erechtheion on the Acropolis in Athens that contains the porch of the Caryatids (the ladies that hold up the roof!). Back in 400BC they would have been looking at a HUGE statue of the Goddess Athena Promachos whose gilded spear could be seen out to sea. the statue stood there for 1000 years before being taken to Constantinople in 465AD, where is was destroyed by a superstitious mob in 1203.
